Typical Day for Leadership Participants

ymca camp participantsBecause our leadership participants are involved in providing support and leadership to so many areas of camp, each day brings new and exciting challenges and adventures. While it is true that each day is new and different, there are also many regular activities in which leadership campers participate.

Flag Raising & Morning Circle: At YMCA Cedar Glen we start off each day by coming together as a camp and participating in our traditional flag raising ceremony. Morning circle is concluded with a “thought of the day” to reflect on during the day’s activities.

Cabin Clean: Campers are encouraged to keep their living spaces neat and tidy through our cabin clean competition. Each day cabins are judged and compete for the illustrious “Cleanest Cabin” award and prize at the end of the session.

Leadership Skills Sessions: Throughout their experience, leaders will be involved in a number of interactive classroom based sessions that are focused on developing camp leadership skills. Sample topics for sessions may include conflict resolution, communication, working with children, and group development.

Rest Time: Each day after lunch time is set aside as rest time. Rest time is for campers to spend time in their cabin or yurt participating in low key, relaxed activities like playing cards and board games, or writing letters home. After rest hour, campers and staff are reenergized and ready to go for an exciting afternoon.

Activity Sessions: While at camp, leaders will get a chance to participate in many traditional summer camp activities focused on forming the group into a cohesive team and having fun. Activity selections include high and low challenge courses, climbing wall, mountain biking, orienteering, archery, and outdoor living skills.

Free Swim: Each day campers have the chance to take a dip in our refreshing outdoor pool with all their camp friends.

Journaling: Each evening leaders are given time to reflect on the day responding to questions in their personal journals. Journaling is an excellent way for leaders to think about and understand what they have learned, and record is so they can remember it long after the program ends. Journal content is used as the basis for many different discussions and reflections throughout the program.

Planning Time: Leaders are given an opportunity to develop their skills by providing leadership in many different areas of camp. Ledaers may plan and implement camp events including evening programs, choose your own adventures, morning circle, theme days, and mealtime announcements. In order to deliver fun and exciting programming to all camp participants, leaders spend time working together in planning sessions.
