Your Resume

Your resume is often the employer's first exposure to you.  It needs to be solid enough to convince the employer to pick up the phone and call you for an interview.

Your YMCA employment counsellor can help you build the right resume by following these basic rules:
  • Never let your resume be over two pages
  • Print your resume on simple, white, good quality paper
  • Always type your resume
  • Never allow any typing mistakes.  Give it to other people to proofread
  • Make sure your resume reflects your true experience and work history. Eliminate deceitful information.
  • Keep sentences and paragraphs short, word choice simple and interesting and avoid fancy language: your skills should be impressive enough
  • Leave lots of white space between sections and one inch margins on all sides
  • Adapt your resume for each job application
  • Also do not add personal information such as you age, weight, height, SIN number, number of pets, and family members

Tip Sheets
These tip sheets will help you write your resume.  We've included an example of a functional resume, instructions that will guide you through the process and a list of hard and soft skills that may describe your work history.
