A new life in Canada
YMCA Newcomer Stories
Every year, thousands of people come to Canada to begin a new life. Many people who come here have no friends or relatives to help them. Many do not speak English very well. Many are uncertain about how to find a job and provide for themselves and their families. At the YMCA of Greater Toronto, we are committed to helping Canada’s newcomers settle into their new life. Today, many of the people we helped are now active members of their communities. Thanks to them, we have so many new stories of success to share. Stories like these:

A Whole New World

“It was very cold,” Abeer Fatoohi, 19, says when describing her fi rst day in Canada. “We expected it to be, but you don’t really know it ’till you’re here.” She and her family immigrated to Canada from Iraq in January 2010. “We could not think of a better place than Canada.” > Read more

“I’m fascinated by technology,” says Walid Youssef, 42. In Egypt, Walid used YouTube to learn more about Canadian culture before arriving in Canada. Now he uses Skype, Tango and Messenger to keep in touch with his family. “I can speak and share video with my wife and my son, any time, for free.” > Read more
Reaching For The Stars
“People like people smiling,” Mrigank Mehta, 14, declares when refl ecting on his fi rst day taking part in Voices. “Canadians are friendly, of course. Smiling is good.” He learned a lot about Canadians that day in the discussion about peace and respect. “I would recommend this program to any newcomer youth if they want to know more about Canadian culture.” > Read more

Getting To Know The YMCA
He likes movies, sports and the gym, but in particular, Amine Belkaloul says he enjoys skating. “If you’re going to live here, I believe it’s important to know how to skate.” His interest is inspired by Canada’s reputation for producing star athletes and players who perform well on ice. > Read more
