The YMCA of Greater Toronto is part of YMCA Canada. YMCA Canada advocates on behalf of member associations regionally, nationally, and internationally. As a federation of 50 YMCAs and 10 YMCA-YWCAs across the country, together, they serve 1.8 million people in more than 250 communities across Canada.

YMCA Canada is governed by a national voluntary Board of Directors, which oversees national plans and priorities. Local YMCAs across the country nominate volunteer board members. To learn more about YMCA Canada visit the www.ymca.ca

Timeline

1844 - YMCA is founded in London, England by George Williams, as an alternative to the unhealthy social conditions during the Industrial Revolution.

1851 - Before the invention of the light bulb or telephone, even before Confederation the first YMCA in North America opened in Montreal, Quebec on November 25. At first YMCAs had strong links to the Protestant churches but this quickly changed, as people from all churches were welcomed. Today, the YMCA welcomes all people regardless of religion, age, background or ability.

1888 - First indoor YMCA pool is built in the Toronto YMCA; the Montreal YMCA follows in 1892.

1891 - Canadian YMCA director invents basketball.

1895 - Volleyball, a YMCA invention, comes to Canada.

1910 - First national YMCA swimming instruction program launched.

1959 - YMCA of Toronto plays a role in development of York University.

1968 - YMCAs and YMCA-YWCAs establish child care programs for working parents.

1972 - YMCA preschool education begins.

1984 - YMCA Canada initiates annual program to commemorate YMCA Peace Week.

1987 - YMCA Canada introduces a Peace Medallion to recognize the contributions of individuals and groups to building peace.

2001 - The YMCA's 150th anniversary is commemorated with a stamp issued by Canada Post.

2006 - YMCA of Greater Toronto Develops the National YMCA Playing to Learn curriculum that helps children up to age 6 in YMCA child care to discover learning through creative play.

2008 - Annual YMCA Healthy Kids Day is launched to help families embrace lifelong healthy habits.
