Through Thick and Thin

When Chelsea first came to the Newmarket YMCA Employment Centre, she was a part-time employee in a “dead end” retail job. Although she knew she wanted more out of life, she wasn’t sure how to structure a long-term career. Working with a YMCA trainer, Chelsea soon decided she would like to pursue a job in Child Care. By accessing the Job Connect program, she quickly found a position at the a YMCA Child Care Centre, and decided to return to school to complete her education.

Unfortunately, Chelsea’s educational plans fell through and she soon found herself back in another “dead end” retail job. So, once again, she returned to the YMCA for help. And, once again, her YMCA representative helped her find a job in a new line of work – as an office receptionist.

“Within weeks, I was earning more money than ever before,” Chelsea now recalls. “My self-esteem shot through the roof! Not only did I love the work, but shortly after starting, my employer approached me and offered me a new position upstairs in Accounting.”

Although Chelsea did not have a lot of confidence in her math skills, she decided to return to school for a part-time accounting course. Today, she continues to enjoy her position in Accounts Receivable at Time + Plus Canada, and remains grateful for all the support she received from the YMCA.

“All the staff at the Y were supportive and knowledgeable,” Chelsea says. “I will always remember what they have done for me.”
