Every one of our volunteers contributes to the success of the YMCA of Greater Toronto. Occasionally, we like to shine a light on those who go above and beyond with their commitment to our values and purpose. That’s why we want our supporters to know about Baran Kazemi.
For three summers, Baran has volunteered with our North York YMCA Summer Day Camp. She has fond memories of camping with her family as a child, so when she read about our Day Camp opportunities in a YMCA newsletter, it seemed like a wonderful way to give back to the community while doing something she enjoys.
Being a third-year volunteer has allowed her to provide leadership and guidance to new summer student volunteers. Her bubbly, outgoing personality and friendly disposition create a fun experience for fellow volunteers while encouraging them to understand the important role they play in each camper’s development.
For Baran, volunteering at camp is about helping every camper feel safe, welcome, and ready to try something new. She supports fellow volunteer counsellors as they work with campers of all ages, helping create a positive environment where kids can build confidence, enjoy unique experiences, and make new friends.
One of Baran’s favourite moments is the special “beading ceremony” at the end of the day, where campers receive beads to celebrate their participation, teamwork, and achievements. It’s a simple tradition, but one that brings smiles and a sense of pride to every camper.
Knowing that the children look up to their counsellors, Baran makes a conscious effort to lead by example and encourages her fellow teammates to go above and beyond in their daily interactions with campers.
She also wants future youth volunteers to know that camp is more than just a place to volunteer. It’s a caring and supportive team where everyone is approachable and where respect for diversity and equity is part of the culture.
Outside of camp, Baran enjoys spending time with her family and cooking.
Baran, thank you for everything you have done to support the YMCA and our Summer Day Camp Program.
