When young people think about building a strong resume, they might focus on academic achievements, part-time jobs, or volunteering. While these experiences are valuable, student exchange programs offer something unique: the opportunity to develop real-world skills through travel, employment, cultural immersion, and personal growth.
Programs like the YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange (SWSE) and YMCA Youth Exchanges Canada (YEC) help youth gain skills that stand out to employers and schools, while also creating memories and connections that last long after the exchange ends.
Whether you’re preparing for your first job, applying to college or university, or exploring future career paths, participating in a youth exchange can strengthen your resume in meaningful ways.
Real-world skills that employers value
Youth exchanges help participants build transferable skills that strengthen resumes and job applications, including:
- Communication skills
- Adaptability and independence
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Leadership and problem-solving
- Cultural awareness and openness
These experiences also serve as strong examples that young people can use in interviews, scholarship applications, and personal statements.
How SWSE builds work experience

SWSE allows youth ages 16–17 to spend six weeks in another Canadian community while:
- Working full-time in a paid position
- Living with a host family
- Practising French or English daily
- Exploring a new region of Canada
Through their work placements, participants gain hands-on experience and build confidence in professional settings.
Resume skills developed through SWSE:
✔ Customer service
✔ Workplace communication
✔ Time management
✔ Independence
✔ Bilingual communication skills
How YEC develops leadership and collaboration

YEC offers group exchanges for youth ages 12–17 focused on experiential learning, cultural exchange, and community engagement.
Through YEC, youth travel with their group to another Canadian community and later host a partner group in return. Exchanges are often built around themes such as:
- Leadership
- Community involvement
- Culture and diversity
- Geography and environment
- Arts and recreation
Resume skills developed through YEC:
✔ Leadership and teamwork
✔ Communication and collaboration
✔ Problem-solving and adaptability
✔ Cultural awareness and empathy
✔ Public speaking and group participation
These experiences help youth grow personally while building skills that are valuable both academically and professionally.
More than a resume builder
While exchange programs strengthen resumes, many participants say the most meaningful part of the experience is the confidence, friendships, and personal growth they gain along the way.
Youth exchanges help young people step outside their comfort zones, discover new possibilities, and prepare for future opportunities both personally and professionally.
