7 tips for finding the best child care provider in the Greater Toronto Area

02 January 2026 - by Tia Chung

Whether you’re expecting your first child, caring for an infant or toddler, or preparing your preschooler for kindergarten, searching for child care in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) can feel overwhelming. If you are exploring how to find the best child care option for your family, these practical tips can help you be more prepared and feel supported.

1. Know your options: Licensed child care choices for every stage

Understanding what different programs offer can help you choose the right fit for your child’s age and needs.

Licensed early learning centres (infants, toddlers, preschoolers)

These full-day programs combine nurturing care with play-based learning. YMCA early learning uses the Playing to Learn™ curriculum, an approach that helps your child build foundational skills through exploration, conversation, and play.

  • Infants (ages six weeks to one and a half years): Warm, responsive care that supports early development.
  • Toddlers (ages one and a half to two and a half years): Consistent routines and hands-on exploration that builds independence.
  • Preschoolers (ages 2.5 to 4 years): A curriculum that supports early literacy, problem-solving, and social skills t to help prepare for kindergarten.

Before & After School programs (kindergarten to age 12)

For school-age children, YMCA programs offer care before the bell and after dismissal. Using the Y’s A Place to Connect curriculum, children have time to unwind, build friendships, and participate in activities that strengthen social skills and extend learning beyond the school day.

Licensed home child care

Licensed home child care is provided in a caregiver’s home and follows provincial standards. This option can be a good fit for infants and toddlers, especially if you prefer smaller group sizes a home-like setting, and flexible hours.

2. Visit locations or home providers when possible

A visit can help you get a feel for the environment and daily program. Use our Find a Y tool to locate a YMCA child care or home provider near you, and contact them directly to arrange a visit.

Look for:

  • Warm, calm interactions between educators and children
  • Safe, organized spaces
  • Cheerful, developmentally appropriate materials
  • Access to outdoor play areas

If you can imagine your child feeling curious and comfortable, that’s a good sign.

3. Talk with educators about their philosophy

Educators play a key role in shaping your child’s day. A conversation with them can provide valuable insights. Take the opportunity to speak with the supervisors or educators on-site and ask questions during a scheduled visit.

You might ask:

  • How do you view children as learners?
  • How do you support safety, belonging, and independence?
  • How do you partner with parents and caregivers?
  • What does a typical day look like for infants, toddlers, or preschoolers?

You should feel heard, respected, and welcomed as part of your child’s learning team.

4. Pay attention to communication

Clear communication helps you stay connected, even on busy days.

If staying informed matters to you,  this is an important factor to consider.

5. Learn from other parents’ experiences

Other parents can offer some of the most honest and helpful insights.

 You can:

Hearing from other parents can help shape your questions, clarify your priorities, and remind you that you’re not alone.

6. Check licensing and safety practices

Licensed child care programs follow provincial standards for safety, supervision, and child development. You can learn more by visiting a provider’s website, watching online videos, or directly asking questions.

At the YMCA, you can expect:

  • Trained child care educators
  • Allergy-aware environments
  • Clear health and safety protocols
  • Predictable routines that help children feel secure

This can offer peace of mind, especially during the early months of adjusting to a new routine.

7. Trust your instincts

Information guides you, but your intuition matters too. If you feel welcomed, respected, and confident in the environment, that feeling is worth paying attention to.
