Gravity at the YMCA

What is Gravity?
A beginner-friendly guide to this 30-minute YMCA workout.
If you’ve ever walked past a piece of gym equipment and thought, “That looks cool, but also a little intimidating,” you’re not alone.
That’s exactly why Gravity at the YMCA of Greater Toronto is getting attention in the best way.
This innovative group fitness class blends strength training with Pilates-inspired movement in a fast, effective 30-minute workout designed for all fitness levels, including beginners.
Let’s break it down with one of our Central YMCA members, Phil P.
What is a Gravity class?
Here’s how Phil P. describes it:
“Gravity is a unique class that packs a great workout into an efficient 30 minutes. To me, it's a mix of something like Pilates with more of a weight training class. The machine can look intimidating, but it actually makes a lot of complicated exercises very accessible and fun.”
Why Gravity is perfect for beginners
Trying something new at the gym can feel like a big step. The good news is that Gravity is designed to meet you where you are.
Phil P. says:
“For someone who is intimidated to try a new fitness class, I'd recommend Gravity because the difficulty is customizable. You can adjust the machine to make it easier or harder — however you're feeling that day. The instructors are encouraging, helpful, and inclusive of people of all skill levels and abilities.”
What makes YMCA group fitness different?
“Compared with other gyms or studios, the difference for me is that the Y focuses on an inclusive atmosphere. I've never felt intimidated to try something new because it doesn't have the intensity level of something like a private spin studio. Not to say that the classes aren't challenging, just that no one is pushing you to do something you're not comfortable with.”
When asked to describe Gravity in three words, Phil said it’s “fast-paced, challenging, and fun.”
