Anti-Racism & Cultural Diversity

Our Goals:

  • To ensure the Y is intentionally anti-racist and continues to build on the foundational work done on dismantling anti-Black racism.
  • To expand opportunities and access for racialized communities to ensure the Y is racially and culturally diverse, reflective of the communities we serve.
  • To strengthen sustainable, equitable practices, programs, and education that address inequities related to race, ethnicity, religion, and intersecting identities.

Commitment To Dismantling Anti-Black Racism

The YMCA remains steadfast in our commitment to dismantling anti-Black racism, reducing barriers to access, and fostering inclusion for Black individuals across our charity. We focus on anti-Black racism because of the pervasiveness and consistent experience of this type of discrimination both globally and in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). By understanding how anti-Black racism exists within our society and learning to dismantle it, we are better equipped to dismantle all types of racism. To learn more about our efforts, please see the Y’s ongoing updates on dismantling anti-Black racism.

An example of the Y's equity programming under this focus area is the Black Achievers Mentorship Program, designed specifically for Black youth to address barriers stemming from anti-Black racism.

Responsive To Evolving Needs Within Our Community

Discrimination based on race, religion, culture, and ethnicity is unfortunately ever-present within our communities, spurred by past and present events. This includes the rise in anti-Asian racism during the Covid-19 pandemic, anti-immigrant sentiments, namely anti-Indian immigrant rhetoric in the GTA, and rising antisemitism and Islamophobia following conflict in the Middle East.

The YMCA responds to these challenges through messages, programs, and services that promote inclusion, and through education and resources for employees, including mental health supports.
